The layout was constructed in 2004 as a new club layout for the Kent Area 16mm Group.
‘HOPFIELDS’ consists of two separate circuits each with loco steam-up and preparation sidings and long passing loops.
The inner circuit has had an extra rail added to the outside to allow members with 45mm gauge stock and locos to run on the layout.
For exhibition running, scenery modules are added, including a station, loco shed, goods shed and an oast house and associated buildings.
In 2010, the layout was widened and and a dual gauge steaming up bay built to accommodate locos as large as NG16 Garratts and to permit coal and meths fired locos to be
prepared for running on the layout. The layout in this form is now 15’ wide.
